What the 2026 EU customs reform means for importers

The new data hub, the end of the €150 duty exemption and what changes on your next shipment, explained with real examples.

The EU customs reform is the biggest change to European import rules in thirty years. Here is what changes, when, and what to do on your next shipment.

From 2028 every importer will file through a single EU customs data hub instead of 27 national systems. The €150 duty exemption for low-value parcels ends, and responsibility for declarations shifts further towards the importer of record.

What changes, and when

  • 2026: Duty exemption under €150 removed for e-commerce parcels.
  • 2028: EU customs data hub opens for e-commerce imports.
  • 2032: All imports filed through the data hub.

For most B2B importers the day-to-day change is small: your broker still files, but the data quality bar rises and mistakes become visible across every member state at once.

What to do now

  • Check your HS codes against the 2026 tariff.
  • Make sure commercial invoices carry full product descriptions.
  • Ask your forwarder who acts as importer of record on each lane.
The reform rewards importers with clean data. It punishes the ones who have relied on a broker to fix it later.

If you ship with LaneWise, our brokers already file with the extended data set, and your shipment record shows each declaration and its status.
